A pumpkin head photoshoot is an October trend photo with a carved jack-o'-lantern replacing your head, often in a field or patch; also called pumpkin head photos or pumpkin head pictures. This version skips the real pumpkin: upload a full-body photo, and Smew AI keeps your clothes and body, adds the glowing pumpkin head, a field at twilight, and film texture.

Step by step

Steps to create a Pumpkin Head photo on Smew AI

Everything happens in your browser. No editing software, no manual prompt, no watermark.

  1. Upload your photo

Tap "Create your own" and upload yourself, full body. Snap it with your camera or select from your library.

  2. Tap Generate

The button displays the cost. Nano Banana 2.1 places your photo in the Pumpkin head scene and produces one 2K photo. No prompt needed.

  3. Save or share

Your photo renders in minutes as a 9:16 2K image. Save it, share from your device, animate it, or revisit it in your Library.

What photo works best?

Upload one full-body photo, head to toe, in the clothes you want visible. Your head gets replaced, so your outfit, body shape, hands and shoes define the final image.

  • Dress first. All black appears most in top couple posts; flannel, leather, denim and chunky knits are other popular choices. The prompt preserves the clothes, colors and shoes exactly.
  • Face the camera, stand upright, arms relaxed, in bright daylight. The prompt places you on the chair, so the model just needs to see your full outfit clearly.
  • Any backdrop works: the prompt swaps it for the field at twilight.
  • Long hair works fine. Some falls from beneath the pumpkin onto your shoulders.
  • For couple shots, upload two photos, left person first. Each needs their own full-body shot; a single photo of both of you works less well.
  • Use your own photo, or a friend's with permission. Never use a celebrity.

Origin of the Pumpkin Head trend

Know Your Meme and the Daily Dot trace the pumpkin head photoshoot (or pumpkin head photo shoot) to fall 2020 at the latest: groups of friends, couples and families carved out large pumpkins, wore them on their heads and posed outside, often to "Oh Klahoma" by Jack Stauber. It went viral on TikTok in October 2021, becoming the pumpkin head challenge. By 27 October that year, #pumpkinheadphotoshoot topped 52.4 million views, and US Google searches for "pumpkin head photoshoot" hit their five-year peak.

Each October since has brought the trend back. The 2026 wave launched early: a family clip posted 25 September crossed 7.4 million plays, and a couple walking hand in hand down a tree-lined lane crossed 6.1 million after 30 September. On 8 October 2026 the TikTok tag held 33,361 videos and 328.2 million views. AI tools started offering pumpkin head templates in 2025, so now you skip the real pumpkin: an AI photo generator like this makes the picture from one photo.

  2. The trend explodes on TikTok: #pumpkinheadphotoshoot crosses 52.4 million views, mostly friend groups doing the shoot. In The Know

Photo prompt

Use the uploaded image as the base. Keep the person's body, body shape, skin tone, hands and outfit exactly the same as in the photo: the same clothes, colors, fabrics, shoes and accessories. Replace only the head with a large, real carved pumpkin worn over the head, as in a real pumpkin head photoshoot: a big, round, ribbed orange jack-o'-lantern, clearly bigger than a human head, with a short curved green stem on top. Its bottom sits right on the shoulders and the collar, with a soft natural shadow where it meets the clothes, so it clearly looks worn and not floating, and no neck shows. The carved face has two triangle eyes, a triangle nose and a wide grin with a few square teeth. A warm candle glow shines from inside through the carved holes, and inside the holes there is only that glow, never skin or a face. If the person has long hair, a little of it falls from under the pumpkin onto the shoulders. The person sits on an old wooden chair in the middle of a wide, open field of tall, dry, golden grass, legs crossed, hands resting on the knee, body facing the camera. It is dusk: a deep blue sky with a last band of orange light on the horizon, a few bare trees far away and a thin mist low over the grass. Soft, dim light still shows the outfit clearly. Full body from the top of the pumpkin to the shoes, with the chair and the grass in frame. Camera at chest height, 35mm lens, shot on film: soft natural film grain, muted warm and teal colors, gentle contrast. Photorealistic, a real photo, not CGI, not a cartoon. Moody and a little spooky, but fun. Vertical 9:16. Exactly one person, five fingers on each hand. No human face, no text, no logos.

Use the two uploaded images as the base. The person in the first image is on the LEFT. The person in the second image is on the RIGHT. Keep each person's body, body shape, skin tone, hands and outfit exactly the same as in their own photo: the same clothes, colors, fabrics, shoes and accessories. Do not blend the two people and do not swap their clothes. Replace only their heads with two large, real carved pumpkins worn over the head, as in a real pumpkin head photoshoot: big, round, ribbed orange jack-o'-lanterns, clearly bigger than a human head, each with a short curved green stem. The bottom of each pumpkin sits right on the shoulders and the collar, with a soft natural shadow, so they clearly look worn and not floating, and no neck shows. The left pumpkin has triangle eyes, a triangle nose and a wide grin with square teeth. The right pumpkin has round eyes, a small heart-shaped nose and a sweet, curved smile. A warm candle glow shines from inside both through the carved holes, and inside the holes there is only that glow, never skin or a face. If a person has long hair, a little of it falls from under the pumpkin onto the shoulders. The two stand side by side in the middle of a dirt road lined with tall autumn trees, holding hands, facing the camera, the pumpkin heads tilted a little toward each other. It is dusk: a deep blue sky between the trees, a last warm orange light low on the horizon, fallen leaves on the road and a thin mist. Soft, dim light still shows both outfits clearly. Both are full body, from the top of the pumpkins to the shoes. Camera at chest height, 35mm lens, shot on film: soft natural film grain, muted warm and teal colors, gentle contrast. Photorealistic, a real photo, not CGI, not a cartoon. Romantic and a little spooky. Vertical 9:16. Exactly two people, five fingers on each hand. No human faces, no text, no logos.

Photos cost credits, and the create page lists the exact price on the Generate button before you commit. The one-tap price covers one 2K photo, charged once. One photo is 3 credits, so the smallest one-time pack covering it is $9.99 for 100 credits, no subscription. A smaller 1K photo costs less if you run the prompt manually in AI Photo.

Pumpkin head photoshoot ideas: poses, locations and designs

Our default is a wall-worthy portrait: you sit on an old wooden chair in an open field of dry grass at twilight, legs crossed, candle glow in the carved face, with grainy film texture. Under "Make it yours" you can adjust three things before tapping Generate. The options draw from real pumpkin head shoots and top trend posts: their poses, locations and designs.

ChoiceOptionsTip
PoseSitting on a chair (default), hand on the pumpkin, walking to the camera, sitting in the grassA hand on the pumpkin adds a lived-in feel; walking works nicely in a carousel beside still shots.
SettingOpen field at dusk (default), pumpkin patch, tree-lined dirt road, forest edge, front porch, or type your ownStick to outdoors near twilight, so the pumpkin glow is visible.
Pumpkin faceClassic grin (default), spooky, cute, heart eyesClassic triangle eyes and toothy grin appear in most top posts. Heart eyes suit couple posts.

Photography guides list the same pumpkin head photoshoot poses for real shoots: sitting with knees up, standing with one hand on the pumpkin, a slow walk forward and a side profile (Shutter Bombs), and their locations are patches, fields, tree lines and porches (Cienna So). For clothing, Cienna So recommends neutral tones, so the pumpkin takes center stage; all black is the most common in top couple posts. For women, a long black dress creates the gothic look.

For a carousel, test three pumpkin head photo ideas: one seated, one walking forward, one with hand on the pumpkin. The same poses work for any pumpkin photoshoot.

Pumpkin head pictures: couple, friends and family

The pumpkin head photoshoot frequently features pairs. Couples created two of the biggest posts we found: one with 6.1 million plays (30 September 2026) and one with 3.9 million (12 October 2025). In October 2025, US Google searches for the couple version ("pumpkin head couple photoshoot", "couple pumpkin head photoshoot" and "pumpkin head photoshoot couple") totaled around 7,200 that month, and "pumpkin head photoshoot friends" had another 3,600 (Google Ads data, pulled 8 October 2026). The family version added around 4,000 more between "pumpkin head photoshoot family" and "pumpkin head family photoshoot".

Select Couple or friends and upload two full-body photos to create pumpkin head couple photos. You stand side by side on a dirt road with autumn trees at twilight and hold hands, with pumpkin heads tilted toward each other: the classic pumpkin head couple poses from top posts. The two pumpkins receive different carved faces, a classic grin and a sweet smile, so the photo reads as two individuals, not a duplicate. Each of you keeps your own clothes. The pictures also work for engagement or anniversary posts.

The pumpkin head photoshoot works equally for best friends, siblings or a parent and adult child. For larger friend or family groups, create one photo per pair with identical settings, then post the pumpkin head pictures as a carousel, like the family posts in the trend. The template handles two people maximum, because more causes the model to mix outfits.

Prefer a pumpkin patch to the field? Select the pumpkin patch setting under "Make it yours". It works for solo, couple, friends or family pumpkin photoshoots, and nobody drives to a farm.

Real pumpkin or AI: which is simpler?

A real pumpkin head shoot seems simple, but guides warn about the same handful of issues:

  • Weight. "Make sure you pick the lightest one", Kate Backdrop's guide says, which also recommends measuring your head and adding around 12 inches. Cienna So's guide: "Go tall and light so your shoulders bear the weight, not your neck", and "If it feels heavy, stop." One creator's take in October 2025: "That head is heavvvvy".
  • Carving. You cut the bottom off, scoop out as much interior as possible (the Daily Dot also suggests a shower cap), then carve eye holes large enough to see and breathe.
  • Fire. No real candle near your face: guides recommend fake candle lights for the glow, and Shutter Bombs says never to put smoke in a pumpkin someone wears.
  • Light and location. You need a field, patch or road, and good light at the right hour.

The AI route is one photo of you in the clothes, one tap, and the pumpkin, field and twilight light come from the prompt. Real shoots also hide interior skin inside eye holes with a black mask; the AI version shows only the glow.

What fails with an AI pumpkin head photo, and how is it fixed?

These are the typical weak spots of AI pumpkin heads, and what our prompt does for each.

What goes wrongWhat the prompt does about it
The pumpkin hovers above the shoulders or looks stuck onIts base sits directly on the shoulders and collar, with a soft shadow, "so it clearly looks worn and not floating"
The pumpkin is head-sized and resembles a maskIt requests a large pumpkin, "clearly bigger than a human head", like a real worn one
Skin or a face appears through the eye holes"Inside the holes there is only that glow, never skin or a face"
Your outfit shifts color or shapeIt preserves the clothes, colors, fabrics, shoes and accessories exactly as in your photo
Extra or distorted fingersIt requests five fingers per hand and keeps the hands simple, on the knee
It resembles CGI35mm film, natural grain, muted tones: "a real photo, not CGI"

We tested the prompts on two AI-generated adults before publishing: both solo photos, the couple, four "Make it yours" combinations and four videos. The photo prompts succeeded on the first try: the pumpkins sat on shoulders, outfits, boots and watches stayed, every hand had five fingers, and a small tea light glowed inside the carved mouth. For video we tried two motions on Seedance 2.0 Mini. A head turn to camera worked, but the camera zoomed too close. A slow forward walk was clean on both people, with the head still a pumpkin at the end, so that's the one we ship.

Which audio, caption and hashtags pair with a pumpkin head photo?

Your Smew AI photo has no audio, and the video version includes its own original music, so you add a trending audio in TikTok, Instagram or YouTube when posting. The two audios of the pumpkin head trend:

  • "Oh Klahoma" by Jack Stauber, the classic pumpkin head photoshoot song: the typical video shows behind-the-scenes clips, then cuts to the photos on the chorus (Daily Dot, 2024).
  • @stephaniestoven's original sound from her best-friend video of 1 October 2024, which the biggest couple posts of 2025 and 2026 use.

A common format is a carousel or short montage: the solo photo, couple photo, then video. A pumpkin head photo caption that worked: "POV: you convince your whole family to do the pumpkin head trend" (7.4 million plays).

Hashtags (TikTok, 8 October 2026): #pumpkinhead (614.5 million views), #pumpkinheadphotoshoot (328.2 million), #pumpkinchallenge (141.2 million) and #pumpkinheadtrend (95.1 million). Add #couple for couple versions, and keep the platform's AI label on.

FAQ

Pumpkin Head trend questions

What is the pumpkin head photoshoot trend?
It is a fall photo trend where you wear a big carved pumpkin on your head and pose outside, alone, with a partner, or with friends and family. It began around 2020, went viral on TikTok in October 2021 and returns each October; on 8 October 2026 #pumpkinheadphotoshoot had 328.2 million views on TikTok.
When did the pumpkin head trend start?
Know Your Meme and the Daily Dot trace it to fall 2020 at the latest; one of the earliest known videos uploaded to YouTube on 1 November 2020. It became a TikTok sensation in October 2021, when #pumpkinheadphotoshoot crossed 52.4 million views by 27 October.
How do I do a pumpkin head photoshoot without a real pumpkin?
Tap "Create your own", upload one full-body photo of yourself in the clothes you want, and tap Generate. Smew AI keeps your body and clothes, swaps your head for a large carved jack-o'-lantern with a warm interior glow, and places you in an open field at twilight with film texture. No carving, no neck weight and no field trip.
Can I do a pumpkin head photoshoot as a couple?
Yes. Select "Couple or friends" and upload two full-body photos, left person first. You stand holding hands on a tree-lined dirt road at twilight, each with your own carved pumpkin face and your own clothes. It works for best friends and siblings too.
Can I make a pumpkin head video?
Yes. Select "Photo + video": Smew AI creates the photo of you standing on a path in the field, then a 5-second clip where you walk slowly forward, the candle glow flickers, and you stop and lean your pumpkin head toward the lens. The default is Seedance 2.0 Mini (720p, with audio); the Best option uses Seedance 2.5 and costs more credits. No watermark.
What should I wear for a pumpkin head photoshoot?
All black is the most common in top couple posts, and a long black dress creates the gothic version. Other outfit ideas: flannel, leather, denim and chunky knit sweaters, in neutral tones that let the pumpkin stand out. The AI preserves your outfit exactly as in your photo, so dress in the look before taking it.
What song do people use for the pumpkin head trend?
The classic is "Oh Klahoma" by Jack Stauber, the audio of the original pumpkin head challenge videos. Since 2024, many couple and best-friend posts use @stephaniestoven's original sound instead. Add either in the posting app; your Smew AI photo has no audio, and the video has its own original music.
Does the pumpkin head photoshoot work for men and women?
Yes. The prompt preserves your own outfit and build, so it works the same for anyone; our examples are an AI-generated woman and an AI-generated man.
Is there a pumpkin head photoshoot filter?
Not a live camera filter. It is a photo edit that keeps your body and clothes and swaps your head for a carved pumpkin, so the result resembles a real shoot.
Is this the same as the pumpkin head illusion?
No. The pumpkin head illusion, which New Engen listed among October 2026's TikTok trends, is a camera trick: someone holds a real pumpkin close to the lens so it covers a friend's head while the friend dances. The pumpkin head photoshoot is a still photo where the pumpkin is worn on the head, and that is what this template creates.
What is the pumpkin head AI prompt?
Each version has its prompt on this page to copy. The photo prompt keeps your body and clothes, swaps only your head for a large real carved pumpkin worn over it, and sets the scene: an old wooden chair in an open field of dry grass at twilight, 35mm film grain. You can edit it in AI Photo, but the one-tap flow handles it for you.
Does the pumpkin cover my face completely?
Yes. The pumpkin replaces your entire head, so no face appears. That also makes it a good AI Halloween photo to post if you prefer not to show your face. Your clothes, hands and hair still make it yours.
Where can I buy a fake pumpkin head for a photoshoot?
You do not need one for this template: the pumpkin comes from the prompt. For a real shoot, guides recommend a real pumpkin that is as light as possible, sized to your head plus around 12 inches, hollowed out, with a fake candle light inside instead of a flame.
Can I make a pumpkin head photo of my dog or my baby?
This template is built and tested for a person in a full-body photo, so a pet or baby may produce strange results. Pets are rare in this trend: #pumpkinheaddog had only 10 TikTok videos on 8 October 2026. For a baby, never place a real pumpkin on their head.
Does the pumpkin head photo cost credits?
Yes. The create page shows the exact cost on the Generate button before you spend anything. The photo costs far fewer credits than the photo + video version, and if a run fails, the credits return.
Is my photo private?
Yes. Smew AI does not post your photo or the output anywhere or show it to other users. The output goes to your private Library, and you can delete it there anytime.
